Overcoming the change in seasons

As the nights grow longer and the crisp air of autumn settles in, many of us begin to notice a shift in mood. The shorter days and colder weather can sometimes lead to feeling a little low or out of sorts. But the good news is that with a few small lifestyle adjustments, this time of year can be embraced for its beauty and calmness, rather than something to be endured.

Here are some of my general tips to lift your spirits during the autumn and winter months:

1. Embrace Natural Light

With daylight hours dwindling, it’s important to make the most of the natural light we do have. Try to get outside during the day—even if it's just for a 10-minute walk around lunchtime. Exposure to daylight can boost your serotonin levels, helping to elevate your mood.

2. Stay Active

Exercise is one of the most effective mood boosters out there. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a gentle yoga session, or something more intense, movement helps release endorphins that improve our emotional well-being.

3. Nurture Your Connections

As the colder months approach, it’s easy to retreat inward and feel isolated. Make an effort to connect with friends and loved ones, even if it's virtually. Maintaining regular contact can help you feel supported and less alone during these months.

4. Create a Cozy Routine

The darker evenings can be an opportunity to practice self-care. Think warm drinks, soft blankets, and calming activities like reading or journaling. Creating a peaceful and cozy environment at home can be a wonderful way to unwind and beat the seasonal blues.

5. Consider Professional Support

Sometimes, the seasonal dip in mood can be more than just a passing phase. If you're finding it hard to shake off those low feelings, it might help to talk to someone who understands. Video therapy sessions can be a great way to get the support you need from the comfort of your own home, particularly during these colder months when staying cozy indoors feels right.

I offer online therapy sessions tailored to those experiencing low mood, stress, or anxiety, particularly during the autumn and winter seasons. These sessions are a convenient way to access support, offering flexibility and privacy, so you can prioritize your mental health while staying warm indoors.

If you think this could benefit you, feel free to reach out to discuss how video therapy might fit into your life. Remember, looking after your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical well-being.
