The weather can be a useful metaphor for our feelings and dealing with negative thinking.
Firstly we understand that emotions, just like the weather, are very changeable and that we all experience peaks and troughs in how we feel.
We also know that storms pass, as does sunshine, so we learn to value the good and accept the bad. In the same way we don’t try to push clouds away on an overcast day, in acceptance and commitment therapy we learn to be at peace and offer less resistance to things we don’t see as favourable.
Our emotions become amplified when we engage in a battle with our feelings and we attempt to fight and push them away.
So when we accept the ‘bad’ for what it is, and know that just like the clouds, it will pass, we make room for the ‘good’ to return.
